Bricks in the wall of sound

A look into the guitars Gilmour used for the sonic assault of The Wall. (You might end up asking, "Are all these your guitars?")

By Richard Mahon

In this column, I'll be examining Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour's gear and playing techniques from a musicians point of view. Please feel free to e-mail me with questions and ideas for future articles at RichM66@Compuserve.com if you feel you have an idea that readers of Spare Bricks might find of interest.

In keeping with this month's theme of The Wall I'll be covering the gear used by David Gilmour (and Snowy White) for live performances of The Wall on a song-by-song basis.

Gilmour's equipment for The Wall tour included:

Guitars - 1967-71 era Fender Stratocaster (black with a black pickguard and maple fretboard,) 1959 Gold Top Les Paul (with Gibson P-90 pickups,) 1955 Fender Esquire (sunburst with a neck pickup designed and installed by Seymour Duncan,) Ovation Acoustic Guitar and an unknown nylon string guitar.

Amps - 2 100 watt Marshall stacks, 2 4 X 12" speaker cabinets, 2 200 watt Yamaha Leslie Amps with WEM Cabinets, Hi-Watt amp heads, Fender Twin Reverbs & Mesa Boogie Amps

Effects include an Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress Flanger, Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, MXR Phase 90, Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face, Uni-Vibe, Jim Dunlop Cry Baby Wah and 3 Cry Baby Sweep Pedals (tone control, volume pedal, and wah-wah.)

There is no listing for a delay pedal in 1979 though it should be mentioned that Gilmour used an MXR Digital Delay pedal during the 1977 tour for Animals.

"In The Flesh" - Snowy White (Gold Les Paul guitar with flanger) Snowy White is a part of The Surrogate Band. Gilmour doesn't appear on stage until the start of The Thin Ice.

"Happiest Days Of Our Lives" - Fender Stratocaster with Electric Mistress Flanger (and delay)

"Another Brick In The Wall part 2"-1959 Gold Top Les Paul (with Gibson P-90 pickups) Snowy White (Gold Les Paul) Gilmour used this same Les Paul guitar to record the solo for this song in the studio.

"Mother" - Fender Stratocaster with Electric Mistress Flanger This is the set up for Gilmour's guitar solo. Roger Waters is playing an Ovation Acoustic Guitar during this song

"Goodbye Blue Sky" - Ovation Acoustic Guitar

Dave puts his 1955 Fender Esquire through the motions during a live performance of The Wall.

"Hey You" - Gilmour - Fender Stratocaster with Electric Mistress Flanger. Snowy White - High-Strung Acoustic Guitar (the 6th string is tuned to the same E string used on the 1st string, the 2nd string remains the same but the 5th, 4th & 3rd strings are tuned an octave higher like a 12-string guitar)

"Is There Anybody Out There?" - Nylon String Guitar
